In 1977 stichtte Jake Burton Carpenter Burton Snowboards in een schuur in Vermont, USA. Vanaf dat moment heeft Burton steeds nieuwe impulsen aan de snowboardsport gegeven door zijn innovatieve collecties, zijn team van topsnowboarders en zijn rol als grondlegger om de sport overal geaccepteerd te laten worden. In 1996 werd de focus van Burton nog uitgebreid naar andere boardsporten en boardkleding.
